Episode 139 Guest Penny Wincer
Friday Jul 23, 2021
Friday Jul 23, 2021
In this episode, Kate speaks with author Penny Wincer a bout her book 'Tender - The Imperfect Art of Caring.' Penny's story of being a young carer for her mother which comes full circle to finding herself as carer for her son, who has Autism is moving and stirring and throws a light on othering in an ableist society, articulates the struggle of finding help as a carer and raises important questions about how we can support carers.
As carers we have extra weight on our shoulders and that can accelerate a problematic relationship with alcohol, as we try to cope with overwhelm, lack of support and isolation. Here we chat about the gifts and challenges of caring and how to build support and find support and why it takes a village.
Trigger warning: In this episode we discuss death by suicide. Please take care of yourself if you listen to media by respecting your boundaries around subjects you may find upsetting or triggering.

Love Sober Podcast 137 One Year Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Friday Jul 09, 2021
Kate and Mandy get in the same room! Recording together in London, and at the request of one of our US listeners, we reflect back on our one year milestones, why we went back to drinking and discuss tips for people approaching their soberversaries, and how to stay the course and push through that year mark.
This one year soberversary time is so often laden with expectation and anxiety as well as feelings of pride and achievement. How do we navigate the transition from the first year to year two? What should we expect of ourselves? Why is it a thing? Surely we should be bossing it by now? What was missing? Our expectations and minds can hinder more than help at this delicate time for sure.
So in this episode, we talk about things that tripped us us and what we have learned along the way in terms of stress management, support, boundaries and our on ongoing journeys in the hopes that it resonates with anyone out there feeling the wobbles.

This was a great chat about motherhood, feminism and sobriety and how powerful Danusia’s own journey to sobriety has been on writing this incredible book. So grab a cuppa and let’s chat.
Her book NOISE: A Manifesto Modernising Motherhood - 30 March 2021
THE BOOK THAT ANSWERS: HOW CAN I BE A MOTHER AND STILL BE ME?
Part manifesto, part memoir, part guide; this book unflinchingly flips conventional thinking surrounding motherhood on its head. On the one hand, this book is about being a mother, but it's also about how, once we become mothers, we're not allowed to be ourselves. NOISE is a powerful dismantling of the barriers and central tenets that hold women back.
This manifesto was built to start a conversation; it's a call-to-arms to get ideas flowing through our communities, and an invitation to think differently about what we're repeatedly told about motherhood. An intimate, bold blend of memoir, thought-leadership and research, Danusia provocatively reframes the NOISE around motherhood and repositions mothers as the social change agents our world desperately needs.
“A debrief on motherhood for today” The Telegraph
"Danusia makes motherhood political - giving tangible steps to help shift our societal views on motherhood and make a change.” Eve Rodsky, author of NYT Bestseller Fair Play
“It is a beautiful thing when a book about motherhood is about people; about remembering that mothers are people in their own right. I think we so often forget that. This is a soothing slap in the face reminder.” Hollie McNish, author of Nobody Told Me & Slug
